Register of Polish War Graves Edinburgh Mount Vernon Catholic Cemetery

Mount Vernon Catholic Cemetery

The cemetery lies off Mt Vernon Road in the Liberton area of Edinburgh.

According to the Register of the Commission this cemetery contains 30 Polish war graves. Of the 30 burials, the Commission state that 20 are Army, 9 civilian and 1 Navy. There are a further two service personnel that should be included. The basis for their inclusion is that they appear in the Polish list of 1952.

There are a substantial number of Polish post-war graves in this cemetery and some of the inscriptions on the memorials bear testament to previous service in the Polish Armed Forces.

The inscription POLISH FORCES does not appear on the memorial to A. Tyburczy. The assumption is that he was a civilian. In the Polish list of casualties he appears to be commemorated twice. In one listing his rank is given as strz and in the other he is classified as inwalida. His name in both listings is given as Władysław Tyburczy and two slightly different dates of death are given.
