Five cemeteries in Fife contain in total 5 Polish war graves. The cemeteries are-

St Andrews Western Cemetery

Methilhill Cemetery

The cemetery lies off St Andrews Road in Ceres.

The cemetery is located in the eastern part of Dunfermline off Halbeath Road and close to East End Park.

The cemetery lies close to Pattiesmuir south of Dunfermline and off the A985.

The cemetery lies west of the town along the B939 to Ceres.

The cemetery is located at the edge of a housing estate in Methilhill. The entrance can be reached by Cedar Avenue.

The CWGC state that in 1956 a decision was taken that the grave did not qualify as a war grave and no memorial was erected.  Date of birth and place not known.

In a book by Jan Sawicki, “Polska Marynarka Handlowa 1939-1945” volume I, details are given as II mechanik Ignacy Gierach who drowned in Glasgow on 17.1.42.  His ship is stated as the SS “Poznań”. Other source gives 18.1.1941, age 34.  He is buried in Grave K68.

The cemetery is located at Corkerhill Road in Cardonald.

According to the CWGC there are 15 Polish war burials in this cemetery, 4 of which are civilians, 8 Navy personnel, 2 Army and 1 Air Force. There are however a further 3 war graves belonging to soldiers of the Polish Resettlement Corps, making a total of 18.

The cemetery is located at Netherlee Road off Brenfield Road in the Cathcart area

of Glasgow.

 

The cemetery is located at Hallhill Road in the eastern part of Glasgow, not far from

the Edinburgh Road.

 

The cemetery is located in northern part of Glasgow at Lambhill and off Tresta Road.

 

The cemetery is located off London Road in the eastern part of Glasgow and beside the Polish Cemetery in Glasgow. This latter cemetery contains many graves of former members of the Polish Armed Forces who died in later years.

In the cemetery there also lies the remains of General Rudolf Niemira who was the commander of the I Polish Corps artillery during the war and who died in August 1952. He is one of several Polish generals buried in Scotland.
